Social Empowerment for Differently Abled

One of the largest minority group in india,who have suffered long years of neglect,deprivation,segregation and exclusion are persons with disability(PwD). In India,disabled persons are still oppressed,marginalized and denied the opportunity for full citizenship and participation,and form living a reasonable quality of life because of society's persistent stereotypical and prejudiced perception of them as inferior,incapable,inadequate,and a burden on the family resources and society.

It is now been officially recognised that people with disabilities are human beings with all the economic,emotional,physical,intellectual,spiritual,social,and political needs that other people have. Though we have come a long way, we still have much to do to ensure an inclusive , barrier-free and right based society for persons with disabilities through empowering them
The term empowerment has different meanings in different socicultural and political contexts terms include self-strength,control,capable of fighting for one's rights,independence and own decision making.

GOVERNMENT INITIATIVE
A separate Department for empowerment of persons with Disabilities was carved out of the ministry of social Justice and Empowerment on May 12,2012. One of the main objective of this department is rehabilitation at various aspects including social empowerment such as ADIP,SPIDA,DDRS along with other schemes.
1. Assistance to Disabled Persons
(1.1). Cochlear Implant Programme under ADIP scheme was launched on the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, 2014
(1.2). Under ADIP scheme, the department also provide motorized tricycles costing Rs. 37,000/- to persons with Severe Disabilities at subsidiesd rate of Rs. 12,000/-
2. Accessible india Campaign
(2.1). This campaign was launched by prime minister on 31.12.2015
(2.2). This campaign is based on the principles of social model of disability, that disability is caused by the way society is orgsniesd and not the person's limitation and impairments.
3. Deendyal disabled Rehabilitation Schemes(DDRS)
(3.1). Financial assistance is provided to NGOs for project relating to rehabilitation of persons with disabilities
There are many more schemes launched by goverment of indian to empower the disable such as (SIPDA), information,communication,and technology(ICT), Awareness Generatiin and Publicity ,etc;
Social empowerment is indispensable to achieving quality of life for people with disabilities and it is both a continuous process as well as a result.

Problem faced by manual scavengers

Despite the law banning manual scavenging, it is Harsh Reality That the practice still exist in India. As many as 282 people have died while cleaning rivers and septic tanks in country between 2016 to November 2019. Manual scavenging was banned 25 year ago with the passing of employment of manual scavenging and construction of dry latrines( prohibition) Act,1993 but it continues to be in practice. The occupation persist mainly because of continued presence of in sanitary latrines. There are about 2.6 million in sanitary latrine that required cleaning by hand according to Safai Karamchari Andolan. Why manual scavenging still continuous:- Lack of education manual Scavenger are mostly illiterate and have no exposure to any work.
